“We had to scrutinise if they met the requirements and we were satisfied that they did,” said Nyirenda who added that FAM executive committee member James Mwenda will be the returning officer for the elections.

While Innocent Bottoman has the luxury of retaining the hot seat of president unopposed, the centre of focus at the polls are the positions of vice-president and general secretary that have attracted three and two contestants respectively.

Daud Suleman, Gift Mkandawire and Gregory Madeya are contesting for the vice-presidency whereas incumbent GS Williams Banda faces Silver Strikers general secretary Mike Tembo.

Treasurer Tiya Somba-Banda, vice-GS Thoko Chazema and Gilbert Mitawa, who is vying for the position of legal adviser, will also have a plain sailing as they have no challengers.

Thirteen candidates are contesting for five executive member positions and these are Charles Manyungwa, Willy Phalula, Alfred Lungu, Dave Gondwe, Owen Munthali, Nelson Ngalonde, lieutenant colonel Mwase, Godfrey Makawano, Aggrey Khonje, Lyson Gowa-Banda, Kazizwa Banda, Willard Josaya and Geoffrey Tamutamu.

According to Somba-Banda, today’s agenda includes the president and GS’s remarks, consideration of financial reports by the treasurer and proposed amendments to the constitution so that it is in line with that of FAM.

There will also be a presentation on club licensing by FAM club licensing manager Casper Jangale and dissolution of incumbent executive and elections.

Silver Strikers chairperson McDonald Mafuta-Mwale said the financial reports needed to be given to the clubs in advance for scrutiny for meaningful input today.

But Somba-Banda defended the delay, saying it is due to logistical hitches.
